Vehicle history ledger

Shared odometer and service records on a private chain.

A vehicle's history is written by many businesses over many years, and the incentive to quietly change it is real. That is the narrow case for a private ledger in automotive. If a commercial history report already answers your question, or one member is trusted by all, a database does it for less.

// what matters here

What is different in this industry.

01

Recorded at the visit

Odometer readings and services are recorded against the VIN when the work is done, from the shop's own system, not reconstructed later.

02

Backwards readings flagged

A reading lower than the last recorded one is flagged at once, for the member and for anyone who views the history.

03

No personal data on the ledger

The record holds the vehicle, the work and the shop, never the owner's name or address.

04

Small shops can join

Independent shops can write through a hosted node or a simple web form, so membership is not limited to large dealer groups.

Shared vehicle history ledger

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

A network of dealers, independent shops and an auto auction each hold part of a vehicle's history, and disputes over odometer readings and undisclosed repairs end up on someone's desk.

// What we would build

A private permissioned ledger where dealers, shops and the auction record odometer readings, services and repairs against the VIN as they happen, so a vehicle's history is one record no member can quietly change. A commercial history report may already cover your need, and a shared database works if one member is trusted by all; we will say which applies.

// What is in it

  • Odometer readings and services recorded against the VIN at each visit
  • Repairs recorded with the shop, date and parts, never the owner's personal data
  • Readings that go backwards flagged at once
  • History view for members, with a shareable report for buyers
  • A node per member, or a hosted node for small shops

// Stack

  • Hyperledger Fabric (private, permissioned)
  • Node.js
  • Next.js
  • PostgreSQL
  • AWS

// questions

Questions we get about this.

How does this differ from a commercial history report?

Those reports gather data from many sources after the fact. A members' ledger records the work as it happens among businesses that agree to share it. Many members will use both.

Can the owner see or share the vehicle's history?

Yes. Members can give the owner a shareable report, and a buyer can open it without an account.

Who governs a shared vehicle history network?

The members, under an agreement covering who may join, what is recorded and how disputes are handled. We build to that agreement; we do not write it.
