Estimate terms

A range to plan with, not a quote.

Our estimator shows what a project is likely to cost and how long it is likely to take. This page says what that range is, and what turns it into a price.

// in short

An estimate is a range to help you plan. It is not a quote or an offer, and nothing is agreed until you accept a written quote. Saved estimates are private links, deleted 12 months after their last change.

01Who gives the estimates

The estimates on this site are given by Atheron Network Inc., a company incorporated in British Columbia, Canada.

02What counts as an estimate

All of these are estimates:

  • the result of the estimator, on screen, saved or as a PDF;
  • the prices of the starter packages and of the example projects for each industry;
  • the figures in the build-or-hire comparison;
  • anything the ATON Assistant or our support chat says about price or time.

An estimate is not a quote, an offer or a promise. It does not bind you or us.

03How an estimate is worked out

From the answers you give, using our rate card on that day: the effort each part of the work needs, by role, at each role's rate. Effort by role is an estimate of effort, never a timesheet.

The result is a range, low to high. The timeline also shows a delivery date, which is the high end: it is the date a quote would commit to. We may review an estimate's timeline and adjust it; that review never changes the price.

An estimate rests on the assumptions it lists. If they do not hold, the price and the dates change.

04Currency and tax

Figures are in Canadian dollars, before tax. GST or HST, and any other sales tax, is added where it applies, and a client billed outside Canada pays none. If you show the estimate in US dollars, the figures are converted at the rate on our rate card that day, for guidance only. A project billed in US dollars locks its own rate when its quote is signed.

05What an estimate leaves out

  • Hardware prices change. They are confirmed in the quote, and again before we order.
  • Installation by a local contractor needs a site visit. Any range shown for it is indicative only and not part of the estimate.
  • Third-party costs, such as outside auditors, certification bodies, licences, app store accounts and the fees of services your product uses, are yours to pay and are never part of our price, even when an estimate shows a range for them.
  • Where an estimate covers compliance work, we build to the controls and support your audit. Independent auditors issue any certification, and an estimate promises none.

06How a quote becomes binding

After a call about the details, we send a written quote. Its price can differ from the estimate, because it rests on what we have agreed rather than on the estimator's assumptions. A quote is valid until the date printed on it.

A quote binds when you accept it in writing and we confirm, under our master services agreement and statement of work terms. Sending an enquiry, saving an estimate or booking a call commits neither of us to anything.

07Saved estimates

A saved estimate has a private link. Anyone with the link can open it, so share it only with people you choose. It holds your choices and the result, and no name or email address unless you send it to us with an enquiry.

A saved estimate is deleted 12 months after its last change, unless you sent it with an enquiry; then it is kept with that enquiry, as our privacy notice describes. Opened later, a saved estimate shows the result it was saved with. If you change it, the change is saved as a new estimate, worked out from that day's rate card.

08Relying on an estimate

We work to make our estimates realistic. Still, do not rely on an estimate alone for a decision with legal or financial consequences. We are not liable for a decision made on an estimate alone, except where the law does not allow that to be limited.

09Law

The laws of British Columbia, Canada, and the federal laws of Canada that apply there, govern this document. Disputes are heard by the courts of British Columbia, Canada.

10Language

These terms are published in English and in French. Both versions are equally authoritative.
