Shared re-rent ledger

One private record for re-rents between rental companies.

Re-renting works until the month-end settlement, when each company's paperwork tells a different story. A ledger that each rental company runs a node of, fed by GPS and telematics, gives them one record to settle from. It is a narrow case, and we will tell you when a shared database is enough.

// what matters here

What is different in this industry.

01

Hours from the machine

Hours and location come from GPS and telematics as they arrive, not from a driver's note at month end.

02

Condition at both handovers

Photos at handover and return are fingerprinted on the ledger, so neither company can swap them later.

03

Settlement from one record

The month's charges are built from the shared record, and each company sends them to its own accounting.

04

When a database is enough

If one company already keeps the books for all and the others trust it, a shared database is cheaper.

Re-rent ledger for rental firms

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

Rental companies re-rent units to each other when they are short, and settle hours, damage and fuel at month end from each other's paperwork, with disputes on both sides.

// What we would build

A shared record of each re-rented unit's hours, location, condition photos and charges on a private permissioned ledger that each participating rental company runs a node of, fed by GPS and telematics, so settlement starts from one record. If one company is trusted to keep the books for all, a shared database is cheaper, and we will say so.

// What is in it

  • Re-rents requested, accepted and recorded with unit, rate and dates
  • Hours and location from GPS and telematics, recorded as they arrive
  • Condition photos at handover and return, fingerprinted on the ledger
  • Monthly settlement built from the shared record
  • A node for each participating rental company

// Stack

  • Next.js
  • Hyperledger Besu (private, permissioned)
  • PostgreSQL
  • Telematics APIs
  • AWS

// questions

Questions we get about this.

Can competitors see our whole fleet on the ledger?

No. Only units that are re-rented between participants are recorded, and each company sees only its own re-rents.

Do smaller rental companies need to run a node?

No. They can take part through the web portal; running a node is optional.

Is there a token or a public chain?

No. It is a private, permissioned network with no token and no public fees.
