Wood chain of custody

A private ledger for FSC and PEFC chain of custody.

Chain of custody is a record that passes through several companies, each of whom must trust the claims of the one before. A private ledger that each of them runs a node of keeps that record in one place nobody can quietly change. It sits beside certification; it does not replace it.

// what matters here

What is different in this industry.

01

Volumes that must balance

Each company's claimed output is checked against its claimed input as claims are recorded, so an overclaim shows at once rather than at audit.

02

A node for each company

The licensee, the mill and the remanufacturer each hold a copy. Smaller suppliers add their declarations through a portal.

03

QR codes on the bundle

A customer scans a bundle and sees the claim and its source, without seeing the commercial data behind it.

04

Certification stays independent

Your certification body audits and certifies. The ledger keeps the records it audits easy to follow.

FSC/PEFC chain of custody ledger

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

A licensee, its sawmill and a remanufacturer each keep their own chain of custody records, and a customer asking where a shipment's fibre came from waits a week for an answer.

// What we would build

Chain of custody claims, volumes and supplier declarations recorded on a private permissioned ledger that the licensee, the mill and the remanufacturer each run a node of, with QR codes on bundles linking to the claim. Certification stays with your certification body; this keeps the records it audits.

// What is in it

  • Claims and volumes recorded at each transfer, from forest to finished bundle
  • A node for each company in the chain, with a portal for smaller suppliers
  • QR codes on bundles linking to the claim and its source
  • Volume checks so claimed output above claimed input shows at once
  • Exports for the annual audit, in English and French

// Stack

  • Next.js
  • Hyperledger Besu (private, permissioned)
  • PostgreSQL
  • S3-compatible storage
  • AWS

// questions

Questions we get about this.

Does the ledger replace our certification body?

No. Certification is issued by your certification body under FSC or PEFC rules. The ledger keeps the records they audit.

Why not a shared spreadsheet or database?

If one company holds the records for all and the others trust it, a database is cheaper. The ledger earns its cost when several companies write claims that the others rely on.

Can customers outside the chain see the records?

They see what the QR code shows them: the claim and its source. Volumes and prices stay among the parties.
