Shared hotel loyalty

On a private ledger that no single hotel controls.

A loyalty programme shared by independent hotels is a balance several businesses write to and none should control. That is the narrow case where a private ledger beats a shared database. If one company runs the programme and the others are happy to trust it, a database is cheaper and we will build that.

// what matters here

What is different in this industry.

01

No hotel holds the keys alone

Each member hotel runs a node, so points cannot be created or rewritten by any single member.

02

Earn at one, redeem at another

Points flow through each hotel's property system, and the guest sees one balance across all of them.

03

Settlement from the same record

What hotels owe each other for redemptions is worked out from the shared ledger, not argued over at month end.

04

Points, not cryptocurrency

Points are loyalty rewards with rules the members agree. They are not traded or sold as tokens.

Loyalty across independent hotels

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

Independent hotels in a region each run a small points programme that guests ignore, and none wants a rival to control the shared balance.

// What we would build

One loyalty programme across the member hotels, with points recorded on a private permissioned ledger each hotel runs a node of, so a guest earns at one and redeems at another, and no hotel can create points or rewrite another's records. If one company runs the programme and the others trust it, a database is simpler.

// What is in it

  • One guest account and balance across every member hotel
  • Points earned and redeemed through each hotel's property system
  • Each transaction recorded on a private chain with a node per hotel
  • Settlement between hotels worked out from the shared record
  • Rules for joining, earning and expiry agreed by the members

// Stack

  • Next.js
  • PostgreSQL
  • Hyperledger Besu (private, permissioned)
  • Property management system interfaces
  • DigitalOcean

// questions

Questions we get about this.

Why not run hotel loyalty on an ordinary database?

If one member or a trusted association runs it, you should. The ledger earns its cost when independent hotels want a shared balance that none of them controls.

Do guests need a wallet for hotel loyalty points?

No. Guests sign in with an email and see their balance. The ledger stays behind the scenes.

How do new hotels join the loyalty network?

With the agreement of existing members, by connecting their property system and running a node, which we can host for them.
