Plant lot traceability

A private blockchain from supplier certificate to batch.

Traceability is a record several companies write to and none of them should be able to rewrite. That is the narrow case where a private, permissioned ledger beats a shared database, and we build it with the supplier portal that feeds it.

// what matters here

What is different in this industry.

01

A node for each party

The plant and its main suppliers each run a node, so no single company holds the only copy of the record, and an edit after the fact shows.

02

Private, not public

Lot data and certificates are commercial. A permissioned chain keeps them among the parties, with no tokens and no public fees.

03

The portal is the product

Suppliers will not use a chain; they will use a form. The portal is where certificates are uploaded, and the ledger records what was uploaded and when.

04

Trace in both directions

From a finished batch back to every supplier lot, and from a suspect lot forward to every customer shipment.

Supplier portal, provenance ledger

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

Certificates of conformance and lot numbers arrive by email, and tracing which supplier lot went into which finished batch takes days.

// What we would build

A supplier portal where certificates and lot data are uploaded against purchase orders, recorded on a private permissioned ledger the plant and its key suppliers each run a node of, so the trace is minutes and nobody can quietly edit it later.

// What is in it

  • Supplier sign-in, purchase orders and certificate upload in English and French
  • Each lot and certificate recorded on a private chain with a node per party
  • Trace from a finished batch back to every supplier lot, and forward to every customer
  • Alerts when a certificate is missing or expires
  • Export for auditors and customers

// Stack

  • Next.js
  • PostgreSQL
  • Hyperledger Besu (private, permissioned)
  • S3-compatible storage
  • AWS

// questions

Questions we get about this.

Why not just a shared database?

If one company runs it and everyone trusts that company, a database is cheaper and we will say so. A ledger earns its cost when several companies write to the record and each needs proof the others cannot change it.

Do suppliers need to understand blockchain?

No. They sign in to a portal and upload documents. The ledger is behind it.

Which chain do you use?

Usually Hyperledger Besu in a private, permissioned network, because it is open source and widely supported. We choose per project.
