Media royalty ledger

One record of rights and royalties for every partner.

Royalties between co-producers are a shared record that every partner keeps separately, and the copies never agree. A private ledger that all partners write to and none can rewrite is a narrow, honest use of a blockchain. If one partner administers royalties and the others trust it, a database is enough.

// what matters here

What is different in this industry.

01

One statement for every partner

Sales, splits and recoupment are worked out from one shared record, so the statement is the same for every co-producer.

02

Every line traceable

Any figure on a statement leads back to the sales report and the deal term it came from.

03

A node per partner

Each co-producer and the distributor run a node, so no single company holds the only copy of the record.

04

Rights windows on the calendar

Territories and windows are recorded with each deal, and partners are alerted before one opens or closes.

Co-production royalty ledger

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

A series made by several production companies is sold in many territories, and each partner keeps its own figures, so every statement period ends in a dispute.

// What we would build

A private permissioned ledger the co-producers and distributor each run a node of, where sales, rights windows and agreed splits are recorded once, with a portal that produces the same royalty statement for every partner.

// What is in it

  • Deals, territories and rights windows recorded against each title
  • Sales reports loaded from distributors and checked on arrival
  • Splits and recoupment worked out from the shared record
  • The same statement for every partner, with every line traceable
  • Alerts before a rights window opens or closes

// Stack

  • Next.js
  • PostgreSQL
  • Hyperledger Besu (private, permissioned)
  • S3-compatible storage
  • DigitalOcean

// questions

Questions we get about this.

Why a ledger rather than a shared spreadsheet?

A spreadsheet can be changed by whoever holds it. A ledger with a node per partner records every sale and split so that a later change shows. If one partner administers royalties and everyone trusts it, a database is simpler and we will say so.

Does a royalty ledger use a token?

No. It is a private permissioned chain. Payments still go through your banks.

Can distributors send sales reports straight in?

Yes. Reports are uploaded or sent through an interface and checked on arrival before they are recorded.
