Shared season passes

One pass across hills that no single hill controls.

A pass shared by independent hills is a record several businesses write to and none should control. That is the narrow case where a private ledger beats a shared database. If one association runs the pass and the members trust it, a database is cheaper and we will build that instead.

// what matters here

What is different in this industry.

01

No hill holds the record alone

Each member runs a node, so visits cannot be added or rewritten by one member.

02

Ride anywhere on one pass

Visits are recorded at each member's gates, and the guest sees one pass across all of them.

03

Shares from the same record

What each hill is owed is worked out from the shared ledger, not argued over at season end.

04

Passes, not tokens

The pass is a pass, with rules the members agree. Nothing is traded as a token.

Shared pass across independent hills

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

Five independent ski hills in a region each sell a pass that few guests buy, and none of them wants a rival to hold the shared pass and its money.

// What we would build

One pass across the member hills, with each visit recorded on a private permissioned ledger every hill runs a node of, so a guest skis at any member hill and each hill is paid its share from the same record. If one association runs the pass and the hills trust it, a database is simpler, and we will build that.

// What is in it

  • One pass and one guest account across every member hill
  • Visits recorded at each hill's gates
  • Revenue shares worked out from the shared record
  • No hill can add or change visits alone
  • Rules for joining and sharing agreed by the members

// Stack

  • Next.js
  • PostgreSQL
  • Hyperledger Besu (private, permissioned)
  • Access gate interfaces
  • DigitalOcean

// questions

Questions we get about this.

Why run a shared season pass on a ledger instead of a database?

Only when independent members want a record none of them controls. If an association runs the pass and members trust it, a database is the better choice.

Do skiers need a wallet to use a shared pass?

No. Guests buy and use the pass with an ordinary account. The ledger stays behind the scenes.

How does a new hill join the shared pass?

With the members' agreement, by connecting its gates and running a node, which we can host for it.
