Trial supply ledger

Custody of clinical trial kits, from sponsor to site.

Trial supplies pass through several companies, and each needs a custody record the others cannot edit after the fact. That is the narrow case where a private ledger is worth more than a shared database. Participant data stays off the chain entirely.

// what matters here

What is different in this industry.

01

A node for sponsor, depot and CRO

Each party runs a node, so the custody history is not one company's spreadsheet, and a changed entry shows.

02

Kits, not participants

The ledger records kit numbers, handovers and temperatures. Nothing that identifies a participant is written to it.

03

Excursions caught at handover

Temperature data is checked when a kit changes hands, and an excursion quarantines the kit in the system until someone qualified releases it.

04

One history for an inspection

Any kit's full custody, from release to dispensing or destruction, can be exported for an inspector in one step.

Trial supply custody ledger

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

Trial supplies move between the sponsor, a depot and dozens of sites, and the record of who held each kit, and at what temperature, is spread across spreadsheets and courier emails.

// What we would build

A shared chain of custody on a private permissioned ledger the sponsor, depot and CRO each run a node of, with an Android app for scanning kits at handover and a portal for temperature data and excursions.

// What is in it

  • Kit handovers scanned on an Android device at the depot and the site
  • Each handover and temperature reading recorded on a private chain
  • Excursions flagged at once, with the affected kits quarantined in the system
  • A full custody history for any kit, for the sponsor and inspectors
  • Interfaces to the IRT and the depot's inventory system

// Stack

  • Next.js
  • React Native (Android)
  • Hyperledger Besu (private, permissioned)
  • PostgreSQL
  • AWS

// questions

Questions we get about this.

Is a ledger worth it beyond the IRT alone?

If one system that every party trusts already holds custody, no, and we will say so. A ledger earns its cost when several companies record handovers and each needs proof the record was not changed later.

Do depot and site staff need training on blockchain?

No. They scan a kit on a phone at handover. The ledger records the scan in the background.

Can the custody ledger connect to our IRT?

Yes, through the IRT's interface, so kit assignments and shipments flow in without retyping.
