Resale certificates

Digital authenticity bound to the item, not the receipt.

Authenticity is the narrow case where a public chain earns its place in retail: the certificate has to outlive your relationship with the first buyer and be checkable by strangers in a resale market. If you only need a genuine-or-not check at your own counter, a database is simpler, and we will say so.

// what matters here

What is different in this industry.

01

Bound to the item, not the receipt

Each certificate is tied to an NFC tag that signs every scan, so a copied tag fails the check.

02

No wallet required

Customers claim certificates with an email sign-in; a wallet is optional for those who want to hold it themselves.

03

Nothing personal on chain

The chain holds the item and its certificate, never names or addresses, so resale history does not expose your customers.

04

Revocable for returns and thefts

A returned or reported stolen item has its certificate marked, and the public check page shows it.

Resale authenticity certificates

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

A sneaker and streetwear label sees its products resold every day beside counterfeits, and resale buyers have no way to check that an item is genuine or who owned it before.

// What we would build

A digital certificate issued as a token on a public chain when an item is sold, bound to its NFC tag, which passes to the next owner on resale, with a web page where anyone can check an item. If you only need a genuine-or-not check and never track resale, a signed record in your own database is simpler and cheaper, and we will say so.

// What is in it

  • Certificate issued at sale and bound to the item's NFC tag
  • Customers claim it with an email sign-in or their own wallet
  • Transfer to the next owner when the item is resold
  • Public check page, with no personal data on chain
  • Smart contracts tested and independently reviewed before launch
  • Admin to revoke certificates for returns and reported thefts

// Stack

  • Solidity
  • Base (Ethereum layer 2)
  • Next.js
  • NFC tags (NTAG 424 DNA)
  • PostgreSQL

// questions

Questions we get about this.

Do customers pay fees to transfer one?

Only if you want them to. On a layer 2 network such as Base, fees are low enough for the brand to cover them, and the customer never sees them.

Is an authenticity certificate an NFT?

Technically it is a token on a public chain, but it is not sold on its own; it travels with the physical item and has no price of its own.

What if the chain we choose falls out of favour?

The certificates are standard tokens, and the contracts and the check page are yours. We plan how to move them before launch.
