Shared salon gift cards

One card for a town, held by no single salon.

A gift card shared by independent salons is a balance several businesses write to and none should control. That is the narrow case where a private ledger beats a shared database. If an association runs the card and the members trust it, a database is cheaper and we will build that instead.

// what matters here

What is different in this industry.

01

No salon holds the balance alone

Each member runs a node, so no single salon can add or change a balance.

02

Spend it anywhere in town

Cards are sold and redeemed through each member's point of sale, with one balance across all.

03

Settlement from the same record

What each member owes or is owed is worked out from the shared ledger.

04

Gift cards, not tokens

The card is a gift card with rules the members agree. Nothing is traded as a token.

Gift cards shared by independent salons

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

Independent salons and spas in one town want a gift card clients can spend at any of them, and none wants a rival or a card company to hold the balance.

// What we would build

One gift card across the member businesses, with each sale and redemption recorded on a private permissioned ledger every member runs a node of, so balances are shared and each member is settled from one record. If a business association runs the card and everyone trusts it, a database is simpler, and we will build that.

// What is in it

  • One card and balance across every member
  • Sold and redeemed through each point of sale
  • Settlement between members from the shared record
  • No member can add or change a balance alone
  • Rules for joining and settling agreed by the members

// Stack

  • Next.js
  • PostgreSQL
  • Hyperledger Besu (private, permissioned)
  • Point of sale interfaces
  • DigitalOcean

// questions

Questions we get about this.

Why run shared salon gift cards on a ledger?

Only when independent salons want a balance none of them controls. If an association runs the card and members trust it, a database is the better choice.

Do clients need a wallet to use the shared gift card?

No. They use a plastic or phone card like any gift card. The ledger stays behind the scenes.

How does a new salon join the shared gift card?

With the members' agreement, by connecting its point of sale and running a node, which we can host for it.
