Shared commissions

One record of who sold what.

A regional pass or a shared sales network is a record many independent businesses write to and none should control. That is the case where a private ledger earns its cost. If an association runs the pass and everyone trusts its books, a database is cheaper and we will build that.

// what matters here

What is different in this industry.

01

Recorded by the party that sold it

Each sale and redemption is written once, by the operator or reseller that made it.

02

No one can rewrite it

Every member runs a node, so no party can add or change a sale alone.

03

Settlement from the same record

Commissions and payouts are worked out from the shared ledger, not argued over at month end.

04

Money stays where it is

The ledger records sales and what is owed. Payments still move through your bank or payment provider.

Shared commission ledger

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

A regional pass sold by a tourism association covers a dozen independent operators, and every month the operators, the association and the resellers argue over who sold what and who is owed.

// What we would build

Each sale and each redemption recorded on a private permissioned ledger the operators, the association and the main resellers run nodes of, so commissions and payouts are worked out from one record nobody can rewrite. If the association runs the pass and everyone trusts its books, a database is simpler, and we will say so.

// What is in it

  • Each sale and redemption recorded once, by the party that made it
  • Commissions and payouts worked out from the shared record
  • No party can add or change a sale alone
  • Statements each member can check against its own sales
  • Rules for joining and settling agreed by the members

// Stack

  • Next.js
  • PostgreSQL
  • Hyperledger Besu (private, permissioned)
  • Booking system interfaces
  • DigitalOcean

// questions

Questions we get about this.

Why use a ledger for tour commissions instead of a database?

Only when several independent parties write to the record and none should control it. Otherwise a database is the better choice.

Do tour guests ever see the commission ledger?

No. Guests book as usual. The ledger is shared between the businesses behind the sale.

How does a new operator join the shared commission ledger?

With the members' agreement, by connecting its booking system and running a node, which we can host for it.
