Material ledger

Recycled material tracked from scale to end market.

A producer program's report depends on figures from collectors, processors and end markets, each of whom reports in its own way. A ledger that the program and its main processors each run a node of keeps those figures in one record. It is a narrow case, and the program's own database is often enough.

// what matters here

What is different in this industry.

01

From scale data, not forms

Weights come from scale house records at each step, so the record starts from the same numbers each party bills from.

02

Shipments matched to receipts

Each shipment is matched to its receipt at the next step, and differences are flagged as they appear rather than at year end.

03

A node for the main parties

The program and its main processors each hold a copy. Smaller collectors report through a portal.

04

When a database is enough

If participants accept the program's own records, a database is cheaper. The ledger helps when they need a copy nobody can change.

Shared material tracking

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

A producer responsibility program relies on collectors, processors and end markets to report the tonnes they handle, each in its own format, and reconciling them takes months.

// What we would build

A shared record of tonnes moved from collector to processor to end market, recorded on a private permissioned ledger that the program and its main processors each run a node of, fed from scale data, so the program's report starts from one record. If the program's own database is trusted by all, it is cheaper, and we will say so.

// What is in it

  • Shipments recorded by each party with weights from scale data
  • Receipts matched to shipments at each step, with differences flagged
  • A node for the program and each main processor, a portal for smaller collectors
  • Reports by material, region and end market, in English and French
  • Supporting documents fingerprinted on the ledger

// Stack

  • Next.js
  • Hyperledger Besu (private, permissioned)
  • PostgreSQL
  • Scale house software integration
  • AWS

// questions

Questions we get about this.

Does it replace the program's audits?

No. Audits still happen; the shared record makes them faster because every figure has its source.

Can end markets outside Canada take part?

Yes, through the portal. Running a node is optional.

Is there a token for recycled material?

No. It is a private, permissioned record of tonnes moved, with no token and no public fees.
