Provenance records

One record of a work's history, shared between institutions.

When works travel between institutions, each keeps its own copy of the provenance research and the loan papers. Usually signed PDFs in a shared folder are enough. When several institutions want one record that none of them controls alone, a private ledger can hold it.

// what matters here

What is different in this industry.

01

Fingerprints, not documents

Only a fingerprint of each document goes on the ledger; the documents stay private to the members.

02

A node per member

Each institution runs a node, so no single one holds or can quietly change the record.

03

A plain history

The history of each work, as a readable report any member can download.

04

Honest about the choice

If a shared folder and signed PDFs do the job, we tell you before we build a ledger.

Shared provenance record

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

Several museums lend and borrow works between them, and each keeps its own copy of the provenance research, condition reports and loan agreements, which drift apart over the years.

// What we would build

A shared web app where each institution records provenance research and loan documents, with a fingerprint of each document written to a private permissioned ledger that every member runs a node of. A signed PDF often does this job; the ledger helps when several institutions want one record that none of them holds alone.

// What is in it

  • Provenance research and loan documents recorded by each institution
  • A fingerprint of each document written to a private ledger
  • A node per member, so no single institution holds the record
  • A plain history of each work any member can download
  • Documents themselves kept private to the members who share them

// Stack

  • Next.js
  • Hyperledger Besu (private, permissioned)
  • PostgreSQL
  • DigitalOcean Toronto

// questions

Questions we get about this.

Does a ledger prove a work's provenance?

No. It shows who recorded which document and when. The research and its conclusions are your curators' and their advisers'.

Can a lending museum see another member's private files?

No. Members see only the documents shared with them; the ledger holds fingerprints, not files.

What happens if one museum leaves the group?

The record stays with the remaining members' nodes, and the leaving museum keeps a copy of its own entries.
