Cannabis COA registry

Certificates of analysis on a private ledger, lot by lot.

A certificate of analysis is a record the lab writes and the producer, retailers and buyers all rely on. Recorded on a ledger the producer and the lab both run, it cannot be edited or attached to the wrong lot later. A signed PDF often does the job; the ledger helps when several producers and labs share a registry.

// what matters here

What is different in this industry.

01

Written by the lab

The lab uploads the certificate against the producer's lot, so the producer never handles the file in between.

02

Fingerprinted on the ledger

Each certificate's fingerprint is recorded with the lot, so a changed PDF shows at once.

03

A QR code on the case

Buyers scan the case and see the certificate for that lot, as the lab reported it, with no claims added.

04

When a signed PDF is enough

If one producer and one lab are involved, a signed PDF with a lookup page is simpler and cheaper.

Certificate of analysis registry

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

Retailers and provincial buyers ask a producer for the certificate of analysis behind each lot, and PDFs passed along by email can be edited or attached to the wrong lot.

// What we would build

A registry where the testing lab uploads each certificate of analysis against the producer's lot, recorded on a private permissioned ledger the producer and the lab each run a node of, with a QR code on each case that shows buyers the certificate for that lot. A signed PDF with a lookup page often does this job; the ledger helps when several producers and labs share one registry.

// What is in it

  • Certificates uploaded by the lab against the producer's lot number
  • Each certificate fingerprinted on a private chain with a node for producer and lab
  • QR codes on cases that show buyers the certificate for that lot
  • Alerts when a lot is labelled before its certificate is in
  • Test results shown as reported by the lab, with no claims added

// Stack

  • Next.js
  • Hyperledger Besu (private, permissioned)
  • PostgreSQL
  • S3-compatible storage

// questions

Questions we get about this.

Does the registry replace our lab's reporting?

No. The lab reports as it does today; the registry records what it reported against the lot.

Can consumers see the certificates?

Whatever your advisers approve. Usually buyers and retailers see them; consumer-facing information follows the promotion rules.

Is any cannabis sold through the ledger?

No. It records certificates only. There is no token and nothing is sold on it.
