Lab system rescue

Off the old Access lab database, with every result kept.

Many chemical labs still run on an Access database or a workbook full of macros that someone built long ago. When it stops opening on new laptops, the lab stops too. We start with an architecture review and a written plan, then move you to a web-based lab system with every result kept.

// what matters here

What is different in this industry.

01

A review first

We read the old system and write down what it does, including the calculations nobody remembers, before any code changes.

02

Every result kept

Samples, specifications and results are moved and reconciled, so a customer's question about an old lot still has an answer.

03

Certificates from the record

Certificates of analysis are issued from the results and approved by your quality lead, never retyped.

04

Works on any laptop

A web-based system runs in the browser, so the next laptop upgrade does not stop the lab.

Lab system rescue

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

A chemical producer's lab runs on an Access database with Excel macros built fifteen years ago, its author has left, and it no longer opens on the new laptops.

// What we would build

An architecture review of the old lab system first, with a written plan, then a web-based lab system that keeps every sample, specification and result: samples logged and labelled, results entered or imported, certificates of analysis issued from the record for your quality lead to approve, and years of history moved and checked.

// What is in it

  • An architecture review and a written plan before any code changes
  • Samples, specifications and results moved from the old database and reconciled
  • Results entered or imported, checked against the specification
  • Certificates of analysis issued from the record, approved by your quality lead
  • Products and customers read from your ERP
  • SDS references kept with each product and version

// Stack

  • Next.js
  • PostgreSQL
  • ERP API
  • PDF generation
  • AWS Canada

// questions

Questions we get about this.

Can you rescue a lab system whose author has left?

Usually, yes. We read the database and macros, write down what they do, and confirm it with your lab before replacing anything.

Will the lab keep working during the move?

Yes. The old system stays in use until the new one has been checked against it, then the switch happens between shifts.

Is the architecture review sold on its own for lab systems?

The review is the first part of the rescue, priced with it. Either way you get a written plan.
