Hourly energy ledger

Each megawatt-hour claimed once, on a private ledger.

Hour-by-hour matching of clean energy is a record that a producer, several buyers and a verifier all depend on. Each needs proof that a megawatt-hour was claimed once. That shared record is the narrow case where a private ledger fits.

// what matters here

What is different in this industry.

01

Issued once, retired once

A certificate is created from metered production for one hour and retired by one buyer, and the ledger shows both to every party.

02

A verifier with its own copy

An independent verifier runs a node, so the record it checks is the record the parties use, not an export.

03

Alongside the official registries

Where an official certificate registry applies, this sits beside it for hourly matching; it does not replace it.

04

No claim about value

The ledger records production and claims. What a certificate is worth, or whether it counts toward a target, is for the buyer and its advisers.

Hourly energy certificates

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

A producer and its corporate buyers want to match consumption with clean production hour by hour, and each keeps its own spreadsheet of which megawatt-hours were claimed.

// What we would build

Hourly certificates for each site's metered production, issued on a private permissioned ledger that the producer, the buyers and an independent verifier each run a node of, so a megawatt-hour cannot be claimed twice. We make no claim about what a certificate is worth.

// What is in it

  • Metered production read hourly from each site
  • One certificate per hour of production, issued once and retired once
  • Buyers see what they hold and what they have retired
  • A node for the producer, each main buyer and the verifier
  • Exports for the buyer's sustainability reporting

// Stack

  • Next.js
  • Hyperledger Besu (private, permissioned)
  • PostgreSQL
  • Meter data API
  • AWS

// questions

Questions we get about this.

Is this a token we can sell on an exchange?

No. It is a private, permissioned record of hourly production and claims, with no public token.

Why not a database run by the producer?

If buyers accept the producer's records, a database is cheaper and we will say so. The ledger helps when buyers or a verifier need their own copy that the producer cannot change.

Where does the meter data come from?

From the revenue meter or the site's monitoring, read hourly through their APIs, with gaps flagged rather than filled in.
