Seafood tracing

Each lot's path from boat or pen to buyer, on a shared record.

Traceability is a record several parties write: the harvester or farm, the processor and the buyer. On a ledger they each run a node of, no one party holds the record for the others and a changed step shows at once. A shared database run by the processor often does the job; the ledger helps when several companies share one record.

// what matters here

What is different in this industry.

01

Each party writes its step

Harvest, landing, processing and shipping are each recorded by the party that did them.

02

A QR code on the case

Buyers scan the case and see the lot's path, in their language, showing only what each party agreed to share.

03

When a database is enough

If one processor runs the record for everyone, a shared database is simpler and cheaper, and we will say so.

Boat or pen to buyer traceability

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

Buyers ask harvesters and processors where each lot came from, and the answer is pieced together from landing slips, pen records and processor sheets passed along by email.

// What we would build

A traceability system where harvesters or farms, the processor and buyers each record their step against the lot, with each record fingerprinted on a private permissioned ledger the parties each run a node of, and a QR code on each case that shows buyers the lot's path in their language. A shared database run by the processor often does this job; the ledger helps when several harvesters, processors and buyers share one record and none wants to hold it for the others.

// What is in it

  • Catch or harvest, landing, processing and shipping recorded against each lot
  • Each step fingerprinted on a private ledger with a node for each party
  • A QR code on each case that shows buyers the lot's path
  • Buyer pages in English, French, Japanese and other languages you choose
  • Only what each party agrees to share is shown to buyers

// questions

Questions we get about this.

Does the seafood ledger replace our landing records?

No. Landings are recorded as they are today; the ledger records each step against the lot so buyers can follow it.

Can buyers overseas read the traceability page?

Yes. Buyer pages can be in English, French, Japanese and the other languages your buyers read.

Is any seafood sold through the ledger?

No. It records traceability only. There is no token and nothing is sold on it.
