Nation-issued cards

Digital membership cards on a private ledger.

A membership card is the Nation's own statement about who its members are. As a verifiable credential, it can be checked by a partner without a phone call and without the partner seeing more than the card shows. The ledger is a narrow part of it, and we will tell you when a signed card alone is enough.

// what matters here

What is different in this industry.

01

Issued by the Nation alone

Only the Nation can issue, renew and revoke its cards. No company or government holds that power.

02

Nothing personal on the ledger

The ledger holds the Nation's public keys and revocation list. Names and details stay on the member's card and the Nation's own server.

03

Members choose when to show it

The card lives in a wallet app on the member's phone, and they decide when to present it.

04

When a signed card is enough

If only one Nation issues and partners check through it, a signed card with a lookup is simpler. A shared ledger helps when several Nations and partners verify each other.

Community-issued digital cards

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

A Nation issues its own membership cards on plastic, and partners who need to check membership for a program or discount have to phone the office.

// What we would build

Digital cards issued by the Nation as verifiable credentials that members hold in a wallet app, with the Nation alone able to issue and revoke them, and a private ledger holding only the Nation's public keys and revocation list. A signed card with a lookup service often does the job; the ledger helps when several Nations or partners verify each other's cards.

// What is in it

  • Cards issued, renewed and revoked only by the Nation
  • A wallet app for members, in English and the Nation's language
  • Partners check a card without seeing more than it shows
  • No personal data on the ledger: only keys and revocations
  • The Nation's own server for issuing, with records it controls

// Stack

  • W3C Verifiable Credentials
  • Hyperledger Indy or Besu (private, permissioned)
  • React Native
  • Next.js
  • AWS Canada

// questions

Questions we get about this.

Does a digital card replace a government status card?

No. It is the Nation's own membership card. Government-issued documents are separate and unchanged.

What happens if a member loses their phone?

The Nation revokes the old card and issues a new one to the new device after confirming the member, as it would replace a plastic card.

Can several Nations share the network?

Yes. Each Nation runs its own issuer and keeps its own records; the shared ledger lets partners verify cards from any of them.
