Indigenous governments

Software that keeps community data in community hands.

Membership, housing, lands and program records belong to the community they describe. In the systems we build, your community decides where they live, who can see them and what leaves, following the OCAP principles. Your staff spend less time on reports and more time with people.

// what you are up against

The problems we hear most.

01

Records spread across spreadsheets

Membership, program enrolment and housing lists live in separate spreadsheets kept by different staff, and the same family's details are entered three times.

02

Reporting to many funders

Each program reports to a different funder in a different template, and staff rebuild the same numbers every quarter instead of delivering the program.

03

More referrals than you can track

Permit and consultation referrals from governments and companies arrive by email with deadlines, and a missed response date can matter for years.

04

Data held by someone else

Community information ends up in vendor systems and government databases, where the community has little say over who sees it or how it is used.

Each one is hypothetical, labelled as such, and priced live from our rate card. Open any of them in the estimator and make it yours.

Membership, programs, notices

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

An administration keeps its membership list, program enrolments and contact details in separate spreadsheets, and community notices go out by posters, a social media page and phone calls.

// What we would build

A membership and administration system the Nation hosts on its own server, with access to sensitive records approved through the Nation's own governance, program enrolment for staff, and a community app for notices and updates in English and the Nation's language. The data stays where the Nation decides, following the OCAP principles.

// What is in it

  • Membership or citizenship records kept by the Nation, with every view and change logged
  • Access rules set by the Nation, including approvals for sensitive records
  • Program enrolment and eligibility, so families are not entered twice
  • A community app and email for notices, events and updates
  • The Nation's language shown with its own characters, reviewed by language keepers
  • A server owned by the Nation, with backups it controls

// Stack

  • Next.js
  • React Native
  • PostgreSQL
  • Server owned by the Nation
  • Encrypted backups

Housing and maintenance

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

A housing department tracks units, the waitlist and repair requests on paper and in spreadsheets, and maintenance staff in outlying areas cannot see the request history for a home.

// What we would build

A housing system for units, tenancies, the waitlist and inspections, with an iOS and Android app maintenance staff use offline, and rent charges posted to QuickBooks Online, built on the QuickBooks Online API.

// What is in it

Lands, resources and referrals

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

A lands department receives permit and consultation referrals by email from several ministries and companies, each with a deadline, and tracks them in a spreadsheet one person understands.

// What we would build

A web system that logs every referral with its deadline, area and documents, routes it to the right staff and committee, records the Nation's response, and keeps sensitive site information behind access rules the Nation sets.

// What is in it

  • Referrals logged with their source, area, documents and response deadline
  • Reminders before every deadline, to the people responsible
  • Responses and correspondence kept with each referral
  • Map layers from the Nation's own GIS, with sensitive layers restricted
  • A history of every referral in an area, for future negotiations

Private funder reporting

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

Program staff spend days each quarter rebuilding the same participation and spending figures in a different template for each funder.

// What we would build

A reporting workspace that builds each funder's figures from program records, and an assistant on an open-source model running on a server the Nation owns that prepares narrative sections from the Nation's own records for staff to edit and approve. No community data leaves the Nation's server.

// What is in it

  • Participation and spending figures built from program records
  • Templates for each funder, editable by staff
  • Narrative sections prepared from your own records, edited and approved by staff
  • An open-source model on a GPU server owned by the Nation

Community-issued digital cards

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

A Nation issues its own membership cards on plastic, and partners who need to check membership for a program or discount have to phone the office.

// What we would build

Digital cards issued by the Nation as verifiable credentials that members hold in a wallet app, with the Nation alone able to issue and revoke them, and a private ledger holding only the Nation's public keys and revocation list. A signed card with a lookup service often does the job; the ledger helps when several Nations or partners verify each other's cards.

// What is in it

  • Cards issued, renewed and revoked only by the Nation
  • A wallet app for members, in English and the Nation's language
  • Partners check a card without seeing more than it shows
  • No personal data on the ledger: only keys and revocations
  • The Nation's own server for issuing, with records it controls

Community systems, run for you in Canada

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

A Nation's membership, housing and program systems sit on an office server and a few cloud accounts set up by different contractors, and nobody is sure where the backups are or who still has access.

// What we would build

// questions

What buyers in this industry ask us.

Do you work with First Nations, Métis and Inuit?

Yes. We are in British Columbia and work with governments and organizations anywhere in Canada; prices are in Canadian dollars.

How do you handle data sovereignty?

We design for community ownership and control of data, following the OCAP principles: hosting the community chooses, access set by its governance, and no copies kept by us. We claim no certification.

How do payments work?

A deposit to start, then payments at agreed milestones, with 10% held until 30 days after launch. The deposit is a smaller share on larger projects.

Can the work be phased to match funding?

Yes. We can plan the work in phases that match funding cycles, with each phase usable on its own.

// where we work

Find your market.

We work from Kelowna with clients across Canada, the United States and further afield. Each market page covers working hours, hosting, the privacy law that applies, and prices in your currency.
