Subrogation ledger

A private ledger for recoveries between insurers.

Subrogation is a record two insurers both write to and neither should be able to change alone. That is the narrow case for a private permissioned ledger. Where a trusted clearing house already holds that record, a database behind it is the cheaper choice.

// what matters here

What is different in this industry.

01

Agreed once, agreed for good

An offer accepted by both carriers is signed by both and written to every node, so it cannot be quietly revised later.

02

Documents off the chain

Police reports, estimates and photos are exchanged through the console. Only a fingerprint of each goes on the chain, to prove it has not changed.

03

One view of what is owed

Open recoveries, their age and their status are the same for both sides, so follow-up calls become fewer.

04

Joining is a configuration change

A new carrier gets a node and keys. The rules of the group are agreed among the members first, and the network enforces them.

Subrogation between carriers

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

Recoveries between insurers are agreed by letter and phone, each side keeps its own record, and settled amounts are disputed when staff change.

// What we would build

A private permissioned ledger where each participating carrier runs a node and records demands, offers and agreed settlements once, with a web console for recovery staff. Where an industry clearing house already does this, a database behind it is cheaper and we will say so.

// What is in it

  • A node for each participating carrier
  • Demands, offers and settlements recorded once and signed by each side
  • Supporting documents exchanged through the console, with only their fingerprints on the chain
  • Ageing of open recoveries by carrier
  • Exports to each carrier's claims and finance systems

// Stack

  • Hyperledger Besu (private, permissioned)
  • Next.js
  • PostgreSQL
  • AWS

// questions

Questions we get about this.

How many carriers make the ledger worth it?

Enough that bilateral agreements become a tangle, usually more than a handful. Between two carriers, a shared database with signed entries does the job.

Does the subrogation ledger pay out the settlements?

No. Payments still move through your usual banking. The ledger records what was agreed and when it was paid, as each carrier reports it.

Is claimant personal data stored on the ledger?

No. The chain holds claim references, amounts, dates and signatures. Personal details stay in each carrier's own claims system.
