Battery metals ledger

Chain of custody, shipment by shipment.

Battery and vehicle makers ask, shipment by shipment, where the metal came from and how it was made. That record crosses companies that do not share systems and should not be able to rewrite each other's steps, which is where a private ledger fits. If one company controls every step, a database is enough.

// what matters here

What is different in this industry.

01

Each party adds its own step

The mine, concentrator, trader and refiner each run a node and sign what they add, so the buyer knows who stated what.

02

Mass balance, not just documents

When lots are blended or split, the ledger checks quantities in and out, so a passport cannot claim more material than went in.

03

Commercial terms kept private

Prices and contract terms stay off the shared record; what is shared is what the buyer needs to trace the metal.

04

Formats buyers ask for

Exports are shaped to each customer's battery passport and responsible sourcing requests, from the same underlying record.

Battery metals passport

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

A nickel and cobalt producer sells concentrate through traders to refiners, and battery and vehicle makers now ask for a per-shipment record of origin, processing and emissions that no single company holds.

// What we would build

A shipment passport on a private permissioned ledger where the mine, the concentrator, the trader and the refiner each run a node and add their step: origin, assays, weights, processing and emissions data, with documents attached. The buyer sees one passport per shipment that none of them could edit alone. Where a single company controls every step, a database does the job, and we will say so.

// What is in it

  • A passport created at the mine for each shipment, with origin and assays
  • Each party adds its step, weights and documents as custody changes
  • Emissions data per step, with the method stated
  • Mass balance checked when lots are blended or split
  • Exports shaped to each customer's battery passport requests

// Stack

  • Hyperledger Besu (private, permissioned)
  • Solidity
  • Next.js
  • PostgreSQL
  • S3-compatible storage

// questions

Questions we get about this.

Does the ledger certify responsible sourcing?

No. Certification comes from the standards and auditors your buyers recognise. The ledger gives them a trustworthy record of the facts behind it.

What if a trader in the middle will not join?

Its step can be recorded by the parties on either side from the documents it provides, and the passport shows that step as declared by others. Buyers can see the difference.

Can we start with one buyer and one product?

Yes, and we suggest it. A single product and buyer proves the record before more parties join.
