Chain of title record

One shared record of the rights behind a title.

Financiers, distributors and producers all need to see the agreements behind a title. Usually a data room of signed PDFs does the job. When several parties need one record that none of them controls alone, a private ledger can hold the history of who recorded what, and when.

// what matters here

What is different in this industry.

01

Fingerprints on the ledger

Only a fingerprint of each signed document goes on the ledger; the documents stay private.

02

A node for each party

Producer, financiers and distributors each run a node, so the record is shared.

03

A readable report

A plain chain of title report for each title, downloadable by any party.

04

A data room may be enough

If signed PDFs in a data room do the job, we say so before building a ledger.

Shared chain of title record

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

A film's financiers, distributors and the production company each hold their own copies of the option, rights and licence agreements behind the picture, and checking the chain of title means comparing folders.

// What we would build

A shared web app where each party records the agreements behind a title, with a fingerprint of each signed document written to a private permissioned ledger that every party runs a node of. A data room of signed PDFs often does this job; the ledger helps when several parties need one record that none of them holds alone.

// What is in it

  • Options, rights and licence agreements recorded by title
  • A fingerprint of each signed document written to a private ledger
  • A node for each party, so no one holds the record alone
  • A plain chain of title report any party can download
  • Documents themselves shared only with the parties that should see them

// Stack

  • Next.js
  • Hyperledger Besu (private, permissioned)
  • PostgreSQL

// questions

Questions we get about this.

Does a ledger replace our rights clearance work?

No. It records which agreements exist and when they were added. Clearance and opinions on rights are for your own advisers.

Can a distributor see the financing agreements?

Only if you share them. Each party sees the documents shared with it; the ledger holds fingerprints.

What happens to the record after the film is delivered?

It stays with the parties' nodes for as long as they keep them, and each can export a full copy.
