Custody volume ledger

Partner volumes at custody transfer, agreed once.

Volumes at a custody transfer point are a record several companies depend on and none of them should be able to rewrite. That is the narrow case where a private ledger earns its place, and we build it with the integrations that feed and read it.

// what matters here

What is different in this industry.

01

A node for each party

The operator, the midstream company and the main partners each run a node, so a correction after the fact is visible to all of them.

02

Readings from the source

Volumes come from the historian at the meter, not from a spreadsheet, and every correction carries who made it and why.

03

Feeds the accounting

Agreed volumes go to joint venture and royalty accounting through their interfaces, so the books start from the same numbers.

04

No public chain, no token

Volumes are commercial data. A private, permissioned network keeps them among the parties with no token and no public fees.

Custody transfer ledger

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

An operator, a midstream company and the joint venture partners reconcile measured volumes at custody transfer points every month, and every difference becomes a dispute.

// What we would build

Meter readings at each custody transfer point recorded on a private permissioned ledger that the operator, the midstream company and the main partners each run a node of, with the agreed volumes passed to joint venture and royalty accounting. If one party is trusted by all, a shared database is cheaper, and we will say so.

// What is in it

  • Meter volumes read from the historian at each custody transfer point
  • Each reading and each correction recorded on a private chain with a node per party
  • Monthly allocations agreed on the record, not in a spreadsheet
  • Agreed volumes sent to joint venture and royalty accounting
  • An audit export for partners and auditors

  • Next.js
  • Hyperledger Besu (private, permissioned)

// questions

Questions we get about this.

Do all partners need to run a node?

No. The main parties usually do; smaller partners read and approve through a portal.

Does this change our measurement practice?

No. Measurement stays as your engineers and the regulator require; the ledger records the readings and corrections they produce.

When is a shared database the better choice?

When one party already runs the allocation and the others accept its records. Then a well-audited database is cheaper, and we will recommend it.
