Evidence ledger

Every transfer of evidence recorded, on your servers.

Chain of custody is a record that must show every hand an item passed through, and that nobody changed it later. When an agency and a partner lab both write to that record, a private ledger with a node for each can show it. Often a well-audited database does the same, and we will tell you which fits.

// what matters here

What is different in this industry.

01

Fingerprinted at intake

Each digital file is fingerprinted when it is received, so any later change shows when the fingerprint is checked again.

02

Every transfer recorded

Each transfer is scanned and signed, with the person, the place and the time, and recorded where neither party can quietly edit it.

03

On your servers

The ledger and the evidence system run on servers your agency controls. Files stay in your storage; only fingerprints go on the ledger.

04

When a database is enough

If only your agency writes to the record, a database with signed, append-only logs is simpler, and we will recommend it.

Evidence chain of custody record

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

A police service tracks physical and digital evidence on paper logs between the property room, the forensic lab and court, and each transfer depends on a signature that can go missing.

// What we would build

Barcoded evidence labels printed at intake, every transfer scanned and signed, and digital files fingerprinted at intake with each fingerprint and transfer recorded on a private ledger the service and its partner forensic lab each run a node of, on servers the service controls. A well-audited database with signed logs often does this job alone, and we will say so.

// What is in it

  • Barcode labels printed at intake and scanned at every transfer
  • Digital files fingerprinted so any change after intake shows
  • Transfers, signatures and locations recorded on a private ledger
  • Disclosure packages exported with the full custody history
  • Servers on premises, with label printers and scanners listed by quantity

// Stack

  • Next.js
  • Hyperledger Besu (private, permissioned)
  • PostgreSQL
  • Barcode label printers and scanners
  • On-premise servers

// questions

Questions we get about this.

Does a ledger make evidence admissible?

No system decides admissibility. The ledger makes the custody history complete and hard to alter; your Crown and your advisers judge the rest.

Can the lab and our agency both run a node?

Yes, that is the case it is built for. Each keeps a copy, and a transfer between them is recorded once for both.

Is any evidence stored on the chain?

No. Evidence stays in your storage. The ledger holds fingerprints and transfer records only.
