Rental credentials

A verifiable rental history that the renter holds.

A rental reference is a claim one company makes that another wants to check, about a person who should control it. That is the narrow case for verifiable credentials with a small public registry. Inside one landlord's buildings, a database is simpler, and we will say so.

// what matters here

What is different in this industry.

01

The renter holds the record

The credential lives on the renter's phone. They decide which landlord sees it and what it shows, and can prove it without calling the old manager.

02

Nothing personal on chain

The public registry lists which managers can issue and which credentials were revoked. Names, addresses and payments never go on chain.

03

Fakes are easy to spot

A landlord checks the issuer's signature against the registry in seconds, so a made-up reference fails visibly.

04

Open standards

Credentials follow the W3C Verifiable Credentials standard, so other wallets and verifiers can read them, and you are not locked to us.

Portable rental history

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

Renters with a strong payment record cannot prove it to a new landlord without asking the old one, and landlords cannot easily tell a real reference from a made-up one.

// What we would build

Property managers issue a signed rental history credential to the resident's phone, and any landlord can verify it was issued by a registered manager and has not been revoked, using a small registry contract on a public chain. If only one landlord's buildings are involved, a database does the same job more cheaply.

// What is in it

  • Credentials issued by participating property managers, held by the resident
  • The resident chooses what to share and with whom
  • A registry contract listing issuers and revocations, with no personal data on chain
  • A verification page any landlord can use
  • A contract audited before it is deployed

// Stack

  • W3C Verifiable Credentials
  • Solidity
  • Ethereum layer 2
  • Next.js
  • DigitalOcean

// questions

Questions we get about this.

Do renters need a crypto wallet?

No. The credential sits in an app on their phone. There are no tokens, no fees for the renter and nothing to buy.

What if a credential was issued by mistake?

The issuing manager revokes it in the portal, the revocation is recorded in the registry, and any later check shows it as revoked.

How many managers must join to make it useful?

Enough that renters move between them, which in practice means a group of managers or an association in one market. For a single landlord, a database does the job.
