Shared gift cards

One card for a street, held by no single restaurant.

A gift card shared by independent restaurants is a balance several businesses write to and none should control. That is the narrow case where a private ledger beats a shared database. If a business association runs the card and the members trust it, a database is cheaper and we will build that instead.

// what matters here

What is different in this industry.

01

No restaurant holds the balance alone

Each member runs a node, so no one restaurant can add or change a balance.

02

Spend it anywhere on the street

Cards are sold and redeemed through each restaurant's point of sale, with one balance across all.

03

Settlement from the same record

What each restaurant owes or is owed is worked out from the shared ledger.

04

Gift cards, not tokens

The card is a gift card with rules the members agree. Nothing is traded as a token.

Gift cards shared by independent restaurants

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

Independent restaurants on one main street want a gift card guests can spend at any of them, and none wants a rival or a card company to hold the balance and the money.

// What we would build

One gift card across the member restaurants, with each sale and redemption recorded on a private permissioned ledger every restaurant runs a node of, so balances are shared and each restaurant is settled from one record nobody can rewrite. If a business association runs the card and everyone trusts it, a database is simpler, and we will build that.

// What is in it

  • One card and balance across every member restaurant
  • Sold and redeemed through each restaurant's point of sale
  • Settlement between restaurants from the shared record
  • No restaurant can add or change a balance alone
  • Rules for joining and settling agreed by the members

// Stack

  • Next.js
  • PostgreSQL
  • Hyperledger Besu (private, permissioned)
  • Point of sale interfaces
  • DigitalOcean

// questions

Questions we get about this.

Why run shared restaurant gift cards on a ledger?

Only when independent restaurants want a balance none of them controls. If an association runs the card and members trust it, a database is the better choice.

Do diners need a wallet to use a shared gift card?

No. They use a plastic or phone card like any other gift card. The ledger stays behind the scenes.

How does a new restaurant join the shared gift card?

With the members' agreement, by connecting its point of sale and running a node, which we can host for it.
