Rare release provenance

A bottle anyone can check, and nobody can fake.

A numbered rare release is worth checking, and a check is only useful if no single party can change the register. When a producer and its retailers share that register, a private ledger is a fair fit. When the producer alone keeps it and buyers trust it, a database is simpler and cheaper, and we will build that instead.

// what matters here

What is different in this industry.

01

Registered at bottling

Each bottle is recorded with its number and release when it is filled, before it leaves the building.

02

A check anyone can make

A buyer enters the bottle's code on a public page and sees its release and where it was first sold.

03

Shared with your retailers

Retailers record sales on the same ledger, and no one party can add or alter a bottle alone.

04

Bottles, not tokens

The ledger records real bottles. Nothing is sold or traded as a token.

Provenance for rare releases

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

A distillery sells numbered bottles of a rare release, and resale buyers have no way to check that a bottle is genuine and came from the distillery.

// What we would build

Each numbered bottle is registered when it is filled, on a private ledger run by the distillery and the retailers who sell the release, with a public page where a buyer checks a bottle by its code. If the distillery alone keeps the register and buyers trust it, a database with the same public page is simpler, and we will say so.

// What is in it

  • Each numbered bottle registered at bottling
  • A public check page for buyers, by code
  • Transfers recorded when a retailer sells a bottle
  • No bottle can be added or changed by one party alone
  • Members see the bottles they own in their club account

// Stack

  • Next.js
  • PostgreSQL
  • Hyperledger Besu (private, permissioned)
  • DigitalOcean

// questions

Questions we get about this.

Why use a ledger for bottle provenance instead of a database?

Only when several parties, such as the producer and its retailers, write to the register and none should control it. Otherwise a database is the better choice.

Do bottle buyers need a crypto wallet to check a release?

No. They enter the bottle's code on a web page. The ledger stays behind the scenes.

How is the bottle code applied to a rare release?

On the label or a tag at bottling, printed from the same system that registers the bottle.
