Aircraft parts ledger

Back-to-birth parts records on a private blockchain.

A rotable part's history is written by every airline, shop and broker that touches it, often over decades. When one missing certificate can ground a part, a shared record no party can quietly rewrite is worth having. If the part never leaves one company, its maintenance system already holds the history.

// what matters here

What is different in this industry.

01

Release certificates on the record

Each shop visit carries its release certificate, such as a Form One or an 8130-3, attached to the part's serial number.

02

Gaps flagged before installation

A missing shop visit or certificate is flagged before the part is fitted, not found at the next audit.

03

Brokers without a node

Smaller suppliers and brokers write through a portal with their entries signed, so the network is not limited to large companies.

04

A history buyers can check

A part's full history exports as one file for a buyer, a lessor or an inspector.

Back-to-birth parts ledger

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

An airline, its maintenance shop and a parts broker each hold part of a rotable component's history, and one missing release certificate in the chain can leave a serviceable part unusable.

// What we would build

A private permissioned ledger where the airline, the shop and approved suppliers record installations, removals, shop visits and the release certificate for each, such as a Transport Canada Form One or an FAA Form 8130-3, against the part's serial number. The history becomes one record no party can quietly change, and gaps show at once. If all the records sit with one company, its maintenance system already does this job.

// What is in it

  • Each serialised part's installations, removals and shop visits recorded
  • Release certificates attached at every shop visit
  • Gaps in the history flagged before a part is installed
  • Smaller suppliers and brokers write through a portal, with no software of their own to run
  • Export of a part's full history for a buyer, a lessor or an inspector

// Stack

  • Hyperledger Fabric (private, permissioned)

  • S3-compatible storage

// questions

Questions we get about this.

Does the ledger replace our maintenance records?

No. Your maintenance system remains your record. The ledger shares the part's history between the companies that handle it.

Can it detect counterfeit or unapproved parts?

It cannot inspect a part. It shows whether a serial number's history is complete and consistent, which is one of the checks your receiving inspection relies on.

Who can join a parts traceability network?

Companies the members agree to admit, typically airlines, approved maintenance organisations and approved distributors. The members set the rules.
