AI for emissions data

Agents that read utility bills and fuel invoices.

Reading bills is the dullest part of emissions accounting and the easiest to get wrong. An agent can read every format your providers send, check each bill against the last, and leave the approval to a person. That is the job we build it for.

// what matters here

What is different in this industry.

01

Any bill format

Dozens of utilities and fuel suppliers, each with its own layout, read without a template per provider.

02

Checked against the last bill

A consumption figure far from the site's usual, an overlapping period or a missing month is flagged before anyone relies on it.

03

A person approves

Every extracted entry waits for approval, with the bill beside it, and the approval is recorded for the assurance trail.

04

The frontier route, for now

Bills carry little sensitive data, so a frontier model through its API is the fastest start. The design allows a move to an open-source model later.

Bill and fuel invoice agent

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

A retail chain with a hundred sites receives electricity, gas and fuel bills as PDFs in a dozen formats, and a person types each one into the emissions spreadsheet.

// What we would build

An agent that reads each bill, extracts the period, the meter and the consumption, flags what does not look right, and sends it to a person to approve before it reaches the emissions records. It uses a frontier model through its API, the fastest start, since bills carry no sensitive personal data.

// What is in it

  • Bills collected from a shared inbox or an upload folder
  • Period, account, meter and consumption extracted and checked against the last bill
  • Unusual values and missing months flagged for a person
  • Approved entries posted to the emissions records with the bill attached
  • An evaluation set of real bills, run before every change

// questions

Questions we get about this.

What accuracy should we expect from the bill agent?

We measure it on a set of your own bills before launch and share the result. Anything it is unsure of is flagged rather than guessed.

Does it work on scanned paper bills?

Yes, if the scan is legible. Poor scans are flagged for a person to read.

Can it read fuel cards and freight invoices?

Yes. Each new document type gets examples in the evaluation set before it is switched on.
