Bill of lading ledger

Shared freight records on a private blockchain.

A shipment is a record three or more companies write to: the shipper, the carrier and the consignee, and often a broker and an insurer. When none of them should be able to rewrite it alone, a private ledger fits. When one party is trusted by the rest, a database is cheaper, and we will tell you which case you are in.

// what matters here

What is different in this industry.

01

One record per shipment

Pickup, each hand-off, exceptions and the signed delivery are written to the same record, with time, place and photos.

02

No party edits alone

Each company runs a node, so a change after the fact is visible to the others, and a quiet edit to a delivery time shows.

03

Drivers never see the chain

Drivers sign and photograph in the app, consignees sign on the driver's phone, and the ledger records it behind the scenes.

04

Ready for a claim

The full history of a load exports as one file for the insurer, with every signature and photo attached.

Private-ledger bills of lading

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

Shipper, carrier and consignee each keep their own copy of the bill of lading and the delivery record, so a claim for a short or damaged load becomes an argument over whose copy is right.

// What we would build

An electronic bill of lading recorded on a private permissioned ledger where the shipper, the carrier and the consignee each run a node, so pickup, hand-offs and the signed delivery are one record none of them can change alone. If one company already runs the system and everyone trusts it, a shared database does the same job for less, and we will say so.

// What is in it

  • Electronic bill of lading created by the shipper and signed at pickup
  • Each hand-off and exception recorded with time, place and photos
  • Delivery signed by the consignee on the driver's phone
  • A node per company, so no single party holds the only copy
  • Claims export with the full record for the insurer

// Stack

  • Next.js
  • Hyperledger Fabric (private, permissioned)
  • PostgreSQL
  • S3-compatible storage
  • AWS

// questions

Questions we get about this.

Is an electronic bill of lading accepted everywhere?

Acceptance depends on the mode, the jurisdiction and your customers' contracts. We build to the rules your compliance team names and keep a paper step in the process where one is still required.

Do freight partners need their own servers?

Each partner needs a node, which can be a small cloud server we set up and they own. Smaller partners can use a node hosted for them, with the trade-off explained.

Is there a token or a fee per shipment?

No. A private permissioned chain has no token and no public fees; you pay only for the servers it runs on.
