Food you can trace

Software from the receiving dock to the shelf.

Your food safety records sit on a clipboard by the cooler, so a recall means a weekend in the filing cabinet. We build apps for the floor, ordering for your customers, agents that check your labels and a shared record of the cold chain. The records are kept as the work happens.

// what you are up against

The problems we hear most.

01

Food safety logs on clipboards

Temperatures, sanitation checks and corrective actions are written by hand, and an inspector or an auditor finds the gaps before you do.

02

A recall traced too late

Linking an ingredient lot to the finished lots it went into, and those to the customers who received them, means paper, spreadsheets and phone calls.

03

Orders by phone and text

Restaurants and grocers order by phone, text and email late at night, and someone types it all in before the trucks are loaded.

04

Labels that change with every recipe

Each reformulation, new market or allergen change means checking label artwork against the recipe and the rules by hand.

// example projects

Each one is hypothetical, labelled as such, and priced live from our rate card. Open any of them in the estimator and make it yours.

Food safety and traceability app

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

A food processor keeps its HACCP logs, sanitation checks and lot records on paper, so an audit means hunting through binders and a mock recall takes far too long.

// What we would build

An Android tablet app on the floor for critical control point checks, sanitation and corrective actions, with lot codes scanned at receiving and production, and a web back office that traces any lot one step back and one step forward on demand.

// What is in it

  • Critical control point checks on tablets, with limits and corrective actions prompted
  • Cooler and freezer temperatures read from wireless sensors, with alerts out of range
  • Lot codes scanned at receiving, production and shipping
  • One step back and one step forward trace for any lot, exported for the inspector
  • Sanitation schedules and sign-offs with photos
  • Record retention set to the rules your food safety team names, such as the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations

// Stack

  • Next.js
  • React Native (Android tablets)
  • PostgreSQL
  • LoRaWAN temperature sensors
  • GS1-128 barcode scanning

Wholesale ordering app

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

A specialty food distributor takes orders from restaurants and grocers by phone, text and email until late at night, and the mistakes show up on the truck.

// What we would build

A web and mobile ordering app where each customer sees its own price list, order guide and delivery days, orders until the cut-off and pays invoices online, with orders flowing straight into the warehouse system.

// What is in it

  • Customers, invoices and payments kept in step with QuickBooks Online, built on the QuickBooks Online API
  • Customer-specific price lists, order guides and par levels
  • Cut-off times and delivery days per route
  • Substitutions offered when an item is short
  • Invoices and statements paid online
  • Orders sent straight to the warehouse and accounting systems
  • Sales reps order on behalf of customers from the same app

Label and allergen review agent

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

A beverage and snack maker reformulates often, and each change means a regulatory specialist checks label artwork, ingredients and allergen statements against the recipe by hand.

// What we would build

An agent that reads the label artwork and the recipe, checks ingredient order, allergen statements, bilingual text and nutrition facts against the rules your team has written down, and lists each issue with the rule it comes from for the specialist to decide. It runs on a frontier model through its API, which reads artwork well and costs little at a few labels a week; if your recipes are a closely held secret, an open-source model in your own cloud is the alternative.

// What is in it

  • Label artwork and recipe uploaded together, as PDF or image
  • Ingredient order checked against the recipe's weights
  • Priority allergen and gluten statements checked
  • English and French text compared side by side
  • Each issue cited to its rule, for the specialist to accept or dismiss
  • Evaluation set of past labels with known issues, run before every change

Shared cold-chain ledger

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

When a load of produce or seafood arrives warm, the packer, the carrier and the retailer each hold their own temperature data, and the claim turns into an argument over whose logger to believe.

// What we would build

A private permissioned ledger where packer, carrier and retailer each run a node, recording trailer and pallet logger readings, door openings and hand-offs as they happen, so a disputed load is settled from one record nobody could change after the fact. If the others already trust a database run by one of them, that is cheaper, and we will say so.

// What is in it

  • Temperature loggers on pallets and trailers read at each hand-off
  • Readings and door events recorded on the ledger as they arrive
  • Temperature excursions flagged to every party at once
  • Acceptance or rejection at the dock recorded with photos
  • Claims file for a load, exported with its full history

Grocery EDI and ERP integration

Hypothetical. Not a client, not a result.

// The problem

A food producer receives purchase orders from grocery chains by EDI through a service that prints them, and staff type each order, advance ship notice and invoice into the ERP by hand.

// What we would build

An integration that receives orders from each retailer, creates them in your ERP, sends back acknowledgements, ship notices and invoices in the format each retailer requires, and alerts your team to any document that is rejected.

// What is in it

// questions

What buyers in this industry ask us.

Do you work with breweries, wineries and distilleries?

Yes. Production records, wholesale ordering and label review apply to beverage makers as much as to food processors, and we build for producers of any size.

Can our apps and labels work in English and French?

Yes. Bilingual apps are routine for us. We are in British Columbia, work with clients anywhere and price in Canadian dollars.

How do payments work?

A deposit to start, then payments at agreed milestones, with 10% held until 30 days after launch. The deposit is a smaller share on larger projects.

Who owns the code and the data?

You do, once the work is paid for. Your food safety records and customer orders are yours in any case.

// where we work

Find your market.

We work from Kelowna with clients across Canada, the United States and further afield. Each market page covers working hours, hosting, the privacy law that applies, and prices in your currency.
